Winter Symposium an opportunity to transition and reflect

This year’s ACEM Winter Symposium will offer attendees opportunities to reflect on recent shifts in emergency medicine, according to its convenor.

FACEM Dr Mustafa Majeed Omar says while the ongoing challenges of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have created significant and swift changes in emergency medicine (EM), the event will present opportunities for attendees to consider what they mean for the future.

Dr Omar said, “The climate at the coalface in ED needs to transition, it needs to cool down.”

The 2023 ACEM Winter Symposium will take place in Newcastle from 18-21 July.

Accordingly, with the “Transitioning the Coalface” theme mirroring both host city Newcastle’s changing involvement with the coal sector and changing nature of EM, there is plenty of scope for conversation, social interaction, and deep thought across the symposium’s four-day program.

Taking place at the Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre in July, the symposium will present a wide range of topics, ranging from clinical updates in toxicology, through to virtual modes of ED care and the looming spectre of artificial intelligence in medicine.

Keynote speakers at the opening plenary (19 July) are Adjunct Associate Professor Nicola Cunningham and Dr Martin Than, while both ACEM President Dr Clare Skinner and ACEM President-Elect Dr Stephen Gourley will appear during the Symposium. Dr Peter Saul, an Intensivist with an interest in ethics and law, will deliver the event’s final plenary on 21 July.

Dr Omar said, “The scientific program will provide expert workshops on toxicology, resuscitation, and paediatrics. Concurrent sessions will showcase the works of emergency researchers and focus on delivering high value scientific content.”

The ACEM 2023 Winter Symposium will be held from 18 to 21 July at the Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre in New South Wales, Australia. More information, including the full program and details of how to register, can be found at www.acemws2023.com
